Philly a Legitimate Contender to Land Amazon’s Second Headquarters

By

Philadelphia is currently considering the scope of tax incentives it can offer to Amazon in its bid for the e-commerce giant’s second headquarters, writes Mark Dent for Billy Penn.

According to national media, Philadelphia is considered to be one of the legitimate contenders for Amazon HQ2. The question is what it can and will offer to attract the online retailer.

The city has already granted Comcast $40 million in incentives for its two buildings being constructed downtown. However, Amazon will likely require more persuasion, considering the national interest in attracting its new headquarters.

One of the advantages Boston, Denver, and other cities vying for the new headquarters have over Philadelphia are more corporate friendly taxes. A recent study found that Pennsylvania’s corporate taxation is the second most expensive nationwide.

To combat this, both the state and Philadelphia have offered grants and incentives for over a decade, and will most likely do the same for Amazon.

The question is whether it is “a combination of upfront money or tax credits down the road,” said Gene Barr, president of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry.
