A wrecking ball looms at the gateway to downtown Coatesville, but “the poorest city in the state’s richest county” is finally ready for a resurgence akin to West Chester’s and Phoenixville’s, according to a Philadelphia Inquirer report by Michaelle Bond.

The $21 million “Coatesville Gateway” project by DEPG of Legend Properties at the intersection of Lincoln Highway and First Avenue is slated to initiate its demolition phase in August. And it’s currently expected to open to the public near the end of 2018, featuring “a restaurant, offices, shops, and even a sports bar,” the article explained.

“When those walls come down — and that will be very shortly — the message will be heard loud and clear that Coatesville Gateway will be a reality,” said DEPG’s James DePetris.

The inspirational project comes on the heels of three new businesses that opened last month and the imminent start of the rebuilding of Coatesville’s Amtrak station. The city’s real estate value appreciation is also now surpassing the county average.

“(It’s) the first domino to fall in what we expect to be transformational change throughout downtown Coatesville,” said Economic Development Administrator Sonia Huntzinger.
