The state’s very first attempt to harness the power of the sun for an entire community is shining the spotlight on Berwyn’s SolarSense and its founder and CEO Chris Fraga.

The local company was picked to get the renewable energy project up and running for the Navy Yard, according to a Philadelphia Inquirer report by Andrew Maykuth.

The first and larger half of a $2 million, 750-kilowatt effort commissioned by the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corp. is directing SolarSense to construct 1,295 photovoltaic panels on the rooftop of a RevZilla.com warehouse.

The first-phase capacity is listed at 440 kilowatts and will be capable of producing 930,000 kilowatt-hours per year, which will be sold by SolarSense into the Navy Yard microgrid at a higher rate than electricity from non-renewable energy sources.

“There’s a lot of green-thinking customers here who don’t really care about the extra cost,” said Navy Yard Smart Grid Director Rudy Terry.
