After Changes to State’s Liquor Laws, Opportunity Knocks for Local Breweries

Local leaders in the distilling and brewing industries agree that the recent changes made to Pennsylvania’s liquor laws are great for fans of great spirits and artisan brews across Chester County, writes Kenneth Hilario for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Gov. Tom Wolf signed a bill in November that loosened Pennsylvania’s strict alcohol laws by allowing beer distributors to sell six-packs. It also allows breweries to sell beer made in other states.

According to Bill Covaleski, co-founder of Victory Brewing, the clarifications and changes made to the Pennsylvania liquor code make it significantly easier for breweries with the appropriate license to now operate as retail establishments.

This “should encourage more retail-oriented brewery operations to open, as they have been supported by these service opportunities,” said Covaleski.

In addition to making it easier for breweries to function as retail operations, the changes may result in better-quality beers as breweries experiment more. Also, the ability to sell six-packs, four-packs, as well as single cans and bottles of beer, will mean more choice for consumers as they are no longer limited to 12-packs or cases.
