What was supposed to be a “routine” hot-air balloon training flight was anything but after it launched from Glenmoore.

The independent flight of three men and a woman attracted a news chopper, a dozen police cars, myriads of spectators, and now a Federal Aviation Administration investigation when it drifted down into Philadelphia. It made an emergency landing on a baseball field in Kensington, according to a Philadelphia Inquirer report by Robert Moran.

“Holy crap! There’s a hot-air balloon!” one witness said in the article.

The balloon captain claimed it was a “planned landing” after running a fuel consumption test that “encountered heavy winds” at 17,000 feet and 3-degree temperatures. No one was injured.

“They said they really didn’t have (a destination),” Chief Inspector Scott Small said. “That doesn’t make sense to me.”

Both the police and FAA are looking into the incident.
