October is Pennsylvania wine month. With more than 140 wineries in the state, Pennsylvania is seventh in the nation in the number of wineries and fifth in the amount of wine produced. Our wineries, grapes and grape juice provide a $2.35 billion economic impact to the state annually.
Locally, Galer Estate Vineyard and Winery is celebrating by offering a series of classes with Virginia Mitchell, their winemaker. Harvest is quickly approaching so what better lesson from the winemaker then by learning exactly what fermentation is and why it is essential to winemaking.
“We began this lecture series at Galer Estate Vineyard and Winery to educate our consumers on the basics of wine, wine growing, and winemaking. This month’s lesson is about grape growing regions of the world. I’ll be discussing the main grape varieties of each growing region while also discussing old and new world styles of winemaking.”
