Hoping to Address Opposition, Kahn Shrinks Urban Outfitters portion of Devon Yards Project

E. Kahn Development Devon Yard projects, announced in 2015, sits on the site of the former Waterloo Garden retail center.

Following the controversial development proposal which pitted neighbor against neighbor in Devon, Urban Outfitters and E. Kahn Development have come up with a scaled down proposal they hope will be embraced by everyone, writes Natalie Kostelni for Philadelphia Business Journal.

The original plan for Devon Yards had both support and opposition, with neighbors putting up signs for or against the project in their front yards.

The initial concept for the former Waterloo Gardens site that fronts Lancaster Avenue at Waterloo Road included a Terrain garden center, an Anthropologie store, a restaurant, café, and a 93-room boutique hotel.

After strong opposition, the hotel part of the proposal was replaced by apartments, but even that was met with resistance.

E. Kahn and Urban Outfitters have been working on a new plan for the last two months, hoping to find a solution that would keep the essence of the original concept and quell neighbors’ concerns.

“It was a collaboration between us and Urban and we wanted to do a project that would get approved,” said Eli Kahn, owner of the property. “In reality, we wanted to do something that would get done now as opposed to later.”

The new version thought up by the developer and Urban Outfitters completely eliminates the parking garage and apartments. However, it does preserve the large format Anthropologie store, Terrain garden center, a café with boutique event space and Vetri restaurant concepts: Amis and Pizzeria Vetri.
