The 31st Annual Kennett Square Mushroom Festival saw more than 100,000 visitors turn-up to check out the offerings from over 250 participating vendors, writes Fran Maye for Daily Local News.

Despite the weather on Saturday being unusually hot for September folks turned out to celebrate the Mushroom Capital of the World.

“It was a little hot Saturday, but even at 10 a.m., the streets were already packed,” said PA Senator Andy Dinniman. “It’s fascinating when you think about it, that this festival has become one of the top 10 rated national festivals. People come from all over the United States to come to this festival.”

Saturday also included the National Fried Mushroom Eating Championship in the Special Events tent with the winner devouring 4.5 pounds of fresh breaded mushroom in eight minutes.

“Good things are happening right now in Kennett Square,” said Dinniman. “It has used the mushroom agriculture which surrounds the borough as the key to its renewal. And that is really cool.”
