Most people would agree that buying their first home and fulfilling their version of the American dream, is can be one of the most complex and agonizing, yet rewarding, processes any of us will ever experience.
Melissa and Sean McGeehan were already in the throes of that process when they decided to attend a DNB First seminar for first-time homebuyers last Fall.
“We had been renting in Fairmount (in Philadelphia) for a few years when we decided that it was time to buy,” said Melissa, a 34-year-old who works in sales for Berwyn’s Workday, a software company.
“We had already done some preliminary research, so we probably had a little more advanced knowledge about the process than most people.
“Even so, we still had some questions that needed to be asked, and what I liked about the seminar was that it felt more like an informal gathering, where you felt very comfortable asking questions. We had our questions answered by professionals, and learned a lot from the questions of the other people who were there as well.”
DNB First – which for more than 150 years has been helping the region’s individuals, families, and businesses reach their financial goals – will host its next home-buying seminar on Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 6-8 PM at Milito’s Restaurant in Downingtown.
Not long after increasing their education on the subject, which for those who don’t work in real estate or mortgage lending can be as confusing as quantum physics, the McGeehans found their dream home in Downingtown, where Melissa grew up.
“Sean is originally from Ardmore, and he’s the Director of Application Management at Drexel University,” she said. “But we always knew we wanted to settle down in the suburbs. When we found our current home, we wanted to move forward quickly.
“You hear so many horror stories about (real estate) agents and lenders not getting along, but our agent and DNB First worked together well.”
Mary Lisansky, DNB First’s Director of Mortgage Lending with more than 30 years in the industry, said first-time homebuyers “really need all the help they can get.”
And she is happy to provide it.
“We work with the Housing Partnership of Chester County, and present a PowerPoint on things like understanding credit reports, and how to budget money, prevent identity theft, and compare properties,” said Lisansky.
“The participants have great questions. They ask about property taxes, association fees, whether student loans count against credit, and how long they have to be working out of college to qualify for a mortgage.”
Those in attendance at DNB First’s home-buying seminar on September 21st will receive a folder with information about the home buying process, as well as a certificate for $1,000 off their origination fee if they finance with DNB First.
