Networking: Why I follow the Governor’s public schedule ( and why you should too…)

Governor Tom Wolf toured Caln Elementary School last year.

This may sound like a strange networking strategy, but hear me out.  Public officials are often required (and if not, you can request) that they put their schedules out to the public.  I now make it a part of my weekly schedule to look at where the public officials in the region are going to be, and see if I can attend the same events. Here’s why:

Meeting CEOs – Whenever a Senator or Governor is doing a ribbon cutting for a company that is moving their headquarters to that state, I know the CEO, or at least upper management will be there. It’s a great opportunity to get some face time with some hard to reach people. I’ve personally met clients and investors by introducing myself at these events, and having a conversation.

Political familiarity – At these events, other local politicians and cabinet members are usually in attendance as well. Meeting and engaging local leaders helps you become familiar with the community you are in, helps establish you as a member of that community, and you never know who out of you meet will be the a future governors or congressman/women

Public relations relationships – Often, there are reporters at these events. I’ve been able to develop relationships with members of the press as a result of constantly showing up.

Education – By attending these events, I have a close view on the current events/initiatives in the area, as well as who the other local leaders are. I pick up fascinating nuggets at each event I attend.

Cost – The beautiful aspect is that most of these events are free. It’s almost like an exclusive, consistent networking group without paying an annual charge.

This free, easy tactic has helped from a personal and professional level. Give it a try!  Start by signing up to receive Governor Wolf’s schedule here.
