Inspired by a Hawaiian vacation, West Vincent teen siblings Claudia and Van Schneider are bringing more than a taste of the “heavenly” islands to town — they’re bringing a unique entrepreneurial spirit to a local street corner.

The Schneiders are simultaneously helping residents cool off and raising cold, hard cash for college with their Lani Ice stand along Pottstown Pike in front of Ludwig’s Corner Hardware Store, according to a Daily Local News report by Donna Rovins.

Leveraging the Hawaiian word for “heavenly,” Lani Ice offers Hawaiian-style shaved ice made with “a unique layering of ice cream, ice, tropical flavoring and a drizzle of condensed milk,” along with fresh-fruit-and-yogurt smoothies and fruit-and-granola smoothie bowls, the article stated.

“There is nothing like it here. The ice is soft and fluffy like snow,” Claudia said.

In addition, business- and engineering-minded sophomore Van designed the shack and power needs for the business with solar panels, a propane instant water heater and LED lighting. Senior Claudia, meanwhile, employed her interests in art and business to design the logo, menu, recipes, website and social media profiles. Lani Ice cups and bowls are all 100 percent biodegradable.

The children of Mike and Linda Schneider hope the business venture not only pays off but grows in the future.

“It will help me get some money together for college, and it will help me to put together a resume — I think colleges would be interested in it,” Van said in the article. “And hopefully it will go somewhere and we’ll have franchising later and get bigger.”
