Emily Draus, a 2016 Coatesville Area High School graduate and art enthusiast, is this year’s recipient of the Alene McDermott Memorial Scholarship.

Managed by the Brandywine Health Foundation, the Alene McDermott Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in loving memory of the gifted acoustic guitar player and vocalist who passed away after a long battle with breast and ovarian cancers six years ago.

To preserve Alene’s optimistic spirit and her inspirational music, her family and friends started the fund to provide scholarships to Coatesville Area High School graduates who wish to pursue careers in music or art.

Soon-to-be majoring in Graphic Design in the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, Draus is planning to use the scholarship funds for art supplies, food, and housing. Draus, whose passions include art, archery, and writing, also plays the cello, something she became interested in after listening to her brother play.

“I feel just absolutely blessed and it’s amazing I could receive the award,” said Draus, adding that she is ecstatic to be going to Temple in the fall.
