What Does the New Car Seat Law Mean for Your Family?

Baby boy in car seat

According to the new car seat rules signed into law by Governor Tom Wolf on Monday, children in Pennsylvania aged two and under must now be rear-facing in their car seats, writes Kara Seymour for Patch.

The new law mandates that a child under two has to be securely fastened in a rear-facing child passenger restraint system “which is to be used until the child outgrows the maximum weight and limits designated by the manufacturer.” The new law comes into effect 60 days after signing.

The current law has the same requirement for children to be in a restraint system, however, it does not specify in which direction the seat must be facing. Anyone violating the new law will face fines of up to $125 per offense. However, for the first year grace period, only verbal warnings will be issued.

By signing the bill into law, Pennsylvania joins California, New Jersey, and Oklahoma as the fourth state to require rear-facing car seats for its youngest residents.

“We have no greater responsibility as public servants than protecting our most vulnerable, including especially young children,” said Wolf.
