Local YMCA Sends Record Six Swimmers to Olympic Trials
The Upper Main Line YMCA has already set a record and its swimmers haven’t even competed yet in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Never before in the history of the local YMCA’s storied swimming program has it sent six athletes in a single year to the Olympic qualifier.
“This is an incredible opportunity and another reason to be proud of the great work we do here,” YMCA of Greater Brandywine CEO Denise L. Day said. “This latest achievement stands as clear evidence that anyone who walks through the Y’s doors — regardless of where you start — can grow, learn and thrive in meaningful ways.”
The YMCA has sent competitors to the trials in every Olympic year since 1984 except for 1988. This year, the swimmers are Thuy Dinh, Billy Beard, Maddy Zimmerman, Erin Seller, and siblings Tyler and Shannon Rauth.
Dinh is a former U.S. Marine now working as a cyber security consultant in Malvern. Zimmerman is a longtime Upper Main Line YMCA swimmer now competing in college. And Beard is a newcomer who earned his spot at the trials at just 17 years of age.
“It’s great that the end result is we’re going to have people at the Olympic Trials, but the reality is we have the same attitude with whoever’s on our team,” YMCA Coach Louis Petto said. “At the Y, we develop the best in everyone, of every ability. We’re proud of the progress you make, big and small. It all equals success here.”
This year’s Olympic Team Trials will take place in Omaha June 26 through July 3.
