The Meadow at Longwood Gardens.

An astounding and thriving habitat is waiting to be discovered by guests who come to visit the Longwood’s Meadow Garden during ‘Meet Us In The Meadow’ on June 25th.

The Million Pollinator Garden Challenge is a call to action across the country to preserve and create gardens and landscapes to help revive the health of various pollinators across America, which include bees, butterflies, birds, and surprisingly even bats.

MPGC-FINAL-315x315The event is part of National Pollinator Week which is dedicated to helping people understand the importance of pollinators through nationwide educational programming. The activities, which will take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., are free with Gardens Admission.

Among the planned family friendly activities are Pollinator Stations where experts will showcase numerous different native plants that attract pollinators. There are also Meadow Ecology Walks where guests will be joined by Longwood horticulturists in discovering the Meadow Garden. As an added bonus, regional artist Marc Silver will perform live bluegrass music.

As part of the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge and in recognition of National Pollinator Week, guests can register their own pollinator gardens throughout the day.

To be a pollinator garden, it needs plants that provide nectar and pollen sources, a water source, sunny areas with wind breaks, have native or non-invasive plants considered as “pollinator targets”, create continuous blooms throughout the growing season, and minimize the impact of pesticides.
