Film director Kevin Smith had planned to film a sequel to his cult classic, Mallrats, at Exton Mall.

The highly anticipated sequel to Kevin Smith’s cult classic “Mallrats” is happening, just with a slight change in plans according to its famous director, writes Jon Tuleya for Philly Voice.

During an interview given to the WMMR’s “Preston & Steve” show on Friday morning, Kevin Smith announced that what he had first envisioned as a movie has now evolved into a 10 episode series for television.

“It is happening. It’s just taking us a longer time to build it,” said Smith. “What we did is reconfigure it. A couple months ago we started reconfiguring the idea of doing ‘Mallrats’ not as a film as a series.”

Smith announced plans to shoot an update to the cult film using Exton Square Mall as the backdrop in September last year.

The original plan to film “Mallrats 2,” or “Mallbrats” at the Granite Run Mall in Middletown, Delaware County, got scrapped when plans for the demolition of the doomed mall did not fit with Smith’s schedule. The project then relocated to Chester County, where Smith will be shooting the TV series version.

“My plan is still to do it there because the Exton Square Mall people were absolutely lovely and the mall is perfect for all our needs,” he enthused. “As far as I’m concerned that’s where we are going.” The next step is to find a network to broadcast the show.

“Who knew that TV would be the salvation of that movie,” he noted.
