Downingtown Mayor Defends Borough After Trump Tweet

By

A controversial tweet sent by Donald Trump on his way out of the area prompted Downingtown’s Mayor to offer a swift response.

Controversy seems to follow Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump wherever he goes, and Chester County was no exception.

Shortly after leaving his rally in West Chester on Monday, Trump sent out a tweet of a picture showing the old Sonoco paper mill in Downingtown, with a caption that riled many, writes Adam Farence for the Daily Local News, including the Mayor of Downingtown.

Maxwell posted a comment on his Facebook account on Tuesday in response to Trump’s tweet, saying that the presidential candidate is uninformed. He then went on to call him a “jerk” on social media, and responded on Twitter with, “To be honest, that abandoned paper mill and future train station looks better than the Trump Taj Mahal.”

He also pointed out that the Mayor, State Senator Andy Dinniman, representatives from the Hankin Group, and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials have been in discussions since the beginning of the year to build a train station where the old Sonoco building stands.

Some say money for that plan has been mismanaged, but Maxwell is optimistic that the project will be realized.  He says more meetings with involved parties will take place over the next several weeks and the final plans are set to be in place within the year.
