The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority is picking up speed on three Chester County train station projects that will completely transform the look of the local commuter rail line.

Design work is well under way on all three, and construction has arrived in Exton for a parking expansion from 642 spaces to 676, according to the winter 2016 edition of the Transportation Management Association of Chester County’s TMACC Connections newsletter.

While the first of six phases for the Exton Train Station began October 2015 and is scheduled to finish in April, the subsequent five phases will span the next three years. When it’s all said and done, Exton passengers will have new boarding platforms; a new inbound platform station building; waiting shelters and open-air canopies; storm water management improvements; and upgraded signs, lighting and landscaping.

And more work is coming down the tracks on both sides of the Exton line. To the east, improvements to the Paoli Train Station are in the final engineering and design stage with site preparation slated for this summer. By 2018, downtown Paoli will have a new passenger station alongside its bustling intermodal transportation facility. The project there is another step toward streamlining the Keystone Corridor after Amtrak, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and SEPTA electrified the route, removed all at-grade crossings and accelerated train speeds to 110 mph.

To the west, the Coatesville Train Station will welcome a new Third Avenue streetscape in late 2016, followed by a much-anticipated $20 million revitalization of the train station and parking garage starting in 2017.
