The PA Department of Health has released temporary regulations to guide the start of medical marijuana production and distribution.

Bringing the possibility of relief to thousands who suffer from painful health issues, the 149-43 House vote on Wednesday, approved a bill legalizing medical marijuana making Pennsylvania the twenty-third state to allow its use.

However, even though the bill enjoyed overwhelming bipartisan support across the state, the bill did not have the full support of lawmakers from Chester County as only four of the House representatives from Chester County supported the bill, while six voted against.

The Chester County’s representatives who voted for the bill were Thomas J. Quigley, Limerick; Warren Kampf, Tim Hennessey and Stephen Barrar, while  John A. Lawrence, Becky Corbin, Chris Ross, Dan Truitt, Harry Lewis Jr. and Duane D. Milne voted no.

“When the Senate passed Senate Bill 3 last year, national experts agreed that it would be the best medical cannabis protocol in the country,” said State Sen. Daylin Leach, who co-sponsored the legislation in the Senate. “I intend to sit down with Senator Folmer and the advocates to review the House’s changes to our bill while keeping in mind our goal from the beginning of this process, to provide medicine to as many patients as possible, as soon as possible.”

Three of the bill’s opponents, Lewis, Corbin and Lawrence, are also members of the House Health Committee, which bill supporters accused of delaying the vote. Opponents of the bill are said to be social conservatives concerned with the reliability of the medical use of marijuana.

“One reason I still oppose medical marijuana is that doctors are not convinced it won’t do more harm than good” tweeted Sen. Lloyd Smucker while posting a link to a letter from the Pennsylvania Medical Society.

Governor Wolf has already stated that he will sign the legislation which has already cleared the Senate if it did not have any significant additional amendments.
