Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey’s race to re-election could tip toward victory or defeat, all depending on one other name on the ballot — the one at the top, Republican analysts admitted on Philly.com.

If Chester County Republicans get their leader’s pick, Marco Rubio, then Toomey could be back at the Capitol for another four years. If Donald Trump or Ted Cruz prevail, however, he could be packing his bags.

“It dominates the discussion, because it has ramifications not only for who’s going to be president, but it has ramifications down-ticket,” Republican Committee of Chester County Chairman Val DiGiorgio said in the article.

The reason rests in the uncertainty about how certain presidential candidates will shake up voters — attracting some and turning off others. And there’s a lot at stake.

“(Former Gov. Tom) Ridge and other Republicans publicly say they believe Toomey can overcome any handicap that might result from a divisive presidential nominee,” the article reported, “but some privately worry that a Cruz nomination could doom him — and potentially give Democrats control of the Senate.”

Trump and Cruz both offer voters a departure from traditional nominees, and voters seem drawn to something different.

“Your moderate doesn’t win, hasn’t won in recent history,” Cruz’s state campaign chair Lowman Henry said in the article.

But there’s also a strong wind of uncertainty blowing on the other side of the aisle, and Democrats’ choice for president could influence another large swath of voters for or against their ticket.

“This is the most unpredictable election in my lifetime,” Rep. Brendan Boyle said. “So all predictions should be taken with a boatload of salt.”
