Chester County serial entrepreneur Anthony Gold’s newest venture roared to life with a crowdfunding campaign that not only struck a chord with safety-minded customers but surpassed its $40,000 startup goal by more than sixfold.

His and Co-Founder Yasmine Mustafa’s ROAR for Good, a social-mission maker of fashionable safety jewelry, met their 30-day goal in 30 hours and roared on to raise a total of $267,000.

“It generated 3,800 pre-orders in 47 countries, as well as 159 news articles and 18 radio and TV interviews over four weeks,” Philadelphia Magazine reported, calling the launch “one of the most successful crowdfunding campaigns that the Philadelphia tech community has ever seen.”

From the experience came nine lessons that made the most noise throughout the campaign:

  1. It crafted a tight, compelling message to its target market.
  2. It studied the dos and don’ts of previous crowdfunding efforts.
  3. It cultivated and engaged a community of supporters prior to launching.
  4. It gleaned advice from its crowdfunding host, Indiegogo.
  5. It quickly built momentum by launching with 30 percent already committed — from a broad, diverse base.
  6. Its video conveyed a genuine appeal with an empowerment focus rather than a polished Hollywood ad.
  7. It delineated responsibilities to teammates before the flood of attention arrived.
  8. It combated the mid-campaign slump with an appreciation launch party.
  9. It embraced the press and accommodated interviews from everywhere.

“While we are thrilled by the response we’ve received, we are very humbled by the responsibility ahead of us,” Gold and Mustafa wrote in the article. “Our crowdfunding campaign has given us the opportunity to touch many lives, and each one of us at ROAR wakes up every day thinking about how we can make more of a difference.”
