Everyone loves the occasional stroll down memory lane, and now there’s an app for that. A West Chester entrepreneur’s Time Machine Tours now allows you to walk back in time through self-guided tours that take history out of the archives and into modern life on your iPhone or iPad.

“The goal of the app is to make historical information fun, easy to access and engaging,” Founder Kyle Hudson said. “We want to change how people see history. Our users will see history like never before, right in front of them.”

Pre-loaded with three Chester County walking tours, the app features a growing selection of walking tours, each with 10 to 15 historic photographs and captions plotted on an easy-to-follow map. Users can hold the old photo over it’s current location, giving the illusion of looking into the past. Or they can walk through it mentally from anywhere in the world.

Chester County residents can currently travel back in time to explore “West Chester — The Original, “West Chester — Horace Engle” and “Coatesville — Heritage Day.” More tours are being planned through partnerships with the Chester County Historical Society and other museums, educational institutions, historical societies, photographers, artists, tourism bureau and media companies.

Nostalgic photos in a restaurant he worked at first compelled Hudson to imagine such a virtual tour back in 2012, and his prototype revolved around QR codes. Today’s version just won second place in the Greater Philadelphia Alliance for Capital and Technology (PACT) Wayfinding App challenge.
