Even the jolly old elf isn’t immune to a Christmastime mishap, and Main Line Health has a few tips to help ensure a smooth sleigh ride.

“It’s very important that Santa gets plenty of rest prior to his journey,” Bryn Mawr Hospital’s Rothman Orthopedic Surgeon Eric Levicoff said. “He can also prepare by doing some healthy stretching. Stretching is an important component of a fitness routine for seniors. Combined with strength training and aerobic exercises, stretching can help Santa maintain his energy throughout the long night.”

Also on the pre-trip prep list is an annual physical; blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose level checks; a reminder to opt for carrots instead of cookies to help avoid weight gain that could lead to conditions like heart disease and diabetes, as well as low-fat or skim milk; a plea to wear a seatbelt; a few extra layers of clothing, a scarf, mittens, a water-resistant coat and a good pair of boots; and sturdy, rubber-soled boots that help prevent a slip and fall as he gets into and out of his sleigh.

“Although these tips are directed toward Santa, they can really apply to all of our aging community,” said System Medical Director of Geriatric Medicine and Long-Term Care Thomas Lawrence. “To maintain a healthy lifestyle, it’s important for older adults to have regular checkups with a primary care doctor and to have regular health screenings.”
