Lawmakers in Harrisburg are carefully rushing to make their final moves in the ongoing state budget chess match — without making a move that will sacrifice the votes they need to pass it.

“When you move one chess piece, you knock over a few other ones,” Senate Republican lawyer Drew Crompton said in a Philly.com report.

Withholding approval from next-generation companies like Uber and Lyft, as well as the specifics of tax increases and the distribution of extra education funding, are fragile pieces in this real-life game of politics.

“(We) have been working through the weekend to try to go through any tweaks or changes we may want to make to any of these proposals,” Majority Leader Dave Reed said of House leaders in the article.

The House must pass its state budget proposal before it and the already-approved Senate version can be reconciled and sent to the governor to be signed.

Reed hoped to set a vote on the House state budget bill yet this week, he said.
