Longwood Gardens Has Grown the Western Hemisphere’s Largest Chrysanthemum and it’s Awesome
The creators of a must-see mum of immense dimensions are far from being silent about their behemoth bloom; the largest chrysanthemum ever grown outside the Asian continent is drawing global attention to the thousand-acre wood near Kennett Square.
For two weeks in Chester County, a single 8-foot-tall, 12-foot-wide, record-setting chrysanthemum cultivated through 18 months of careful attention will showcase 1,509 beautiful blooms to an admiring public as part of Longwood Gardens’ annual Chrysanthemum Festival, according to an announcement by American Nurseryman.
Dubbed the Thousand Bloom Chrysanthemum, the prized Longwood product revives an ancient Japanese custom called Ozukuri and tops a 94-year tradition of unveiling exoticly-formed chrysanthemum spirals, shields and orbs.
“(It) is the most exacting and challenging of all chrysanthemum training styles,” the article stated.
Longwood’s Chrysanthemum Festival is open through Sunday, Nov. 22.
