Philadelphians celebrated it for a day and are encouraging more of it for a month. Americans in general honor its ideals for a season. But a family business in Wayne is aspiring to facilitate thousands of acts of kindness every single day of the year.

“We want to create a space for kindness to happen,” the City of Brotherly Love’s volunteer-led A Day of Kindness initiative asserted in honor of Philadelphia’s 333rd birthday on Tuesday. “If we extend an invitation for citizens to become reacquainted with their hopes for a kinder world, we believe they will respond.”

It’s the same vision that inspired Wayne’s Hansell family to create A Better World, the fast-growing virtual world game that revolves around do-good online challenges that generate real-world charitable giving.

Now, as the holiday season quickly approaches, game extras that previously cost money will be earned for free through acts of kindness and rewarded as virtual currency called Do-Good Gold.

“The holidays are all about doing good, coming together and giving back; we wanted to do our part,” COO Mary Sue Hansell said in announcing the opportunity. “Making the game free means unleashing the power of the game to do good in the world.”

The Facebook game encourages values long associated with the holiday season, like gratitude, kindness and giving, as well as concerns that face kids today, like anti-bullying, recycling and healthy eating. A Better World has already sparked 35 million acts of kindness.

For October, a lifetime of clean drinking water for 30 people in developing countries is on the line, and World Vision will make that act a reality if the game’s Do-Good Goals are met.
