Kennett Square is leaving pocket change on the table in favor of the quick swipe of your credit card. Without cost to the borough’s taxpayers, a $150,000 parking meter upgrade aims to make parking more convenient. New high-tech meters could soon accept credit cards and possibly mobile payments in the future, according to a Daily Local News report.8.19.2014 Kennett squaref

“Parkmobile and other apps are being considered,” Mayor Matt Fetick said in the article. “The new meters will really help those who are parking to more easily pay the parking fee and avoid tickets and increasing fines. This is really great news and will make parking more friendly.”

The move comes alongside a $1.6 million investment — matched by a grant — in an expanded parking garage at State and Union streets.

The proposal is being made with no change to parking fees and no property tax increase. Final approval of the $14.5 million 2016 budget, which also allocates $300,000 to a southside park land acquisition and levies a small rate hike on water, sewer and solid waste services, is expected to come Monday night during a public meeting that starts at 7 p.m. at the Red Clay Room.
