SafeWise Report: Chester County Boasts Four Badges of Safety

By

East Marlborough Township and three others were named to a list of safest places in America.

Few places in Pennsylvania — or the United States, for that matter — are as safe as Chester County, according to a new SafeWise report that ranks four township police forces among the state’s 50 best.

On top of a crime rate that’s 30 percent less than the national average, East Malborough Township, Upper Uwchlan Township, Willistown Township and East Vincent Township were all heralded for their absence of violent crime and excellence in policing.

“In addition to its bountiful amenities, the Keystone State earns our praise for keeping crime under control,” the SafeWise report stated.

Based on violent crime and property crime stats per 1,000 people in populations larger than 5,000, only one police department was lauded ahead of East Marlborough Township, which posted no violent crimes, a mere 1.6 property crimes per 1,000, thanks in large part to a “cooperative spirit [that] carries through to the township’s police officers, who work in tandem with the Pennsylvania State Police to keep crime at bay.”

The 10-community Southwestern Regional Police Department led all with no violent crimes and 1.2 property crimes per 1,000.

Also making the top 20 was Chester County’s Upper Uwchlan Township, “a member of several multi-jurisdiction groups, such as the Western Chester County Emergency Response Team and the Missing Child Response Team,” which help limit its rates to 0.08 violent crimes and 4.95 property crimes per 1,000.

Coming in at No. 34 was Willistown Township, with 0.47 violent crimes and 6.13 property crimes per 1,000. “In addition to patrol duties and handling 911 calls, many officers also participate in regional specialized teams, like the Chester County Drug Task Force, West Chester Regional Emergency Response Team, and the Serious Crash Assistance Team,” SafeWise noted. “All that extra training and support helps keep the crime rate in Willistown 80 percent less than the national average.”

And ranking No. 37 was East Vincent Township, an especially safe haven for citizens with special needs thanks to its Special Needs Registry. It posted 0.58 violent crimes and 6.12 property crimes per 1,000.
