Jones’ Food Street Journal – Anthony’s Coal Fried Pizza

Anthony's

By David Jones

Time for a little lunch review. This past week we took Mom for a shopping trip to Exton Square Mall and finished up just in time for lunch. Where to go? We thought of all the options and chose Anthony’s Coal Fried Pizza in the strip mall just behind Exton Square.

Its tucked right back in the corner beyond the Giant Market. It was a lovely day and many of the outdoor tables were filled as folks were enjoying some of the really great late fall weather. Dining with two ladies who get cold when it’s in the 80’s we opted for an indoor table.

Anthony’s is loud. That comes with the territory in this kind of place. It is comfortable though. I love the decorations and all the vintage posters and pictures, but I couldn’t help wondering if anyone under 30 knows who some of these characters are.

That being said, it is a very nice interior space with lots of bright sunshine coming in and keeping the place flooded.

The menu is just right for lunch. There’s lots of choices for sandwiches and pizzas. There are also a nice selection of drinks to choose from, with at least 10 beers on draft.

On Monday and Tuesday all day and night, all craft beers are 50% off. With prices regularly $6 and $7, that makes for a really nice price for craft beers. I know it’s always 5 o’clock somewhere, but I held off on the alcohol and just went with water, as did Mom and Lin.

Mom and Lin shared a regular personal size pizza. I tried some of it and thought it was really good, but beware they have signs everywhere telling you the pizza is really well done and it is. If you don’t like thin and crispy stay away from the pizza.

If you do like this style, you’ll love Anthony’s. I got the chicken and broccoli rabe’ focaccia with mozzarella. It was quite salty, but once I got past that, I did like it quite a bit. The service was very good, with the young manager stopping by our table three times during our visit. She was very attentive to all of the tables.

Overall, this is a good place for a drink and bar food. It’s friendly, clean and good food. The prices are reasonable and the specials make it very reasonable. Lin, Mom and I collaborated and give it two and half stars.
