A national endowment’s investment in Chester County will help bring the stories and images of the remarkably rich local history to future generations.

A $400,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities will join the more than $2.1 million in donations and pledges in bringing the Chester County Historical Society’s 6,000-square-foot permanent “Chester County: A Place in History” exhibit to reality.

“In this exhibition, we see great potential to connect the community to the past in meaningful ways, enabling audiences to re-examine events in terms of ideas that make the past relevant to present concerns,” NEH Division of Public Programs Director Karen Mittelman said in announcing the award. “Our reviewers were enthusiastic about the multitude of creative techniques the project proposes to actively engage audiences in this type of critical investigation.”

“A Place in History” is an expansion project slated to open in 2017 with more physical and electronic access to more objects, photographs and manuscripts that highlight the stories of people, places and events that make Chester County unique.

“The entire project team is thrilled to have this significant acknowledgment from the history and museum community,” said CCHS Director of Collections/Curator Ellen Endslow.  “This support will help us build on the long legacy of CCHS to tell a wide range of stories about a diverse population. We are eager to explore new ways of exhibiting our collections.”
