Apple Season Starts In Chester County

By

Falling leaves might be signifying that fall is coming, but for the apple enthusiasts of Chester County they indicate an additional beginning, that of the apple season.

This time of year presents a variety of options through which everyone can enjoy the apple season, from simple things like adding a fresh apple to lunch boxes, to having fun canning apples at home. Best of all, this is the time to indulge in some sweets, as everyone knows that deserts are never tastier than when made from freshly picked fruit.

At West Chester’s Highland Orchards visitors can buy directly from the farm store, but for some real entertainment, there is also the option of a fun hands-on experience for the entire family by venturing right into the orchards themselves. The season for some of the favorites including Jonathan, Red Delicious, and McIntosh will start mid-September, coinciding with the Highland Orchards annual Fall Fest weekends full of fun family events such as orchard hay rides and a kids’ fun area.

Highland Orchards Events Coordinator Art Whitehair predicts that “the prime apple picking season should last through October.”

For people who prefer a larger variety of apples and the chance to sample new and interesting flavors, the selection at Cochranville’s North Star Orchard is another great option. With 350 varieties and evocatively named apples like Smokey Mountain Limbertwig and Crimson Crisp, North Star will be offering its products through farmer’s markets across the county as well as through their fruit CSA program.

Lisa Kershner, North Star Orchard farmer and owner, encourages customers not to judge the book by its cover when it comes to looking for new flavors. “Varieties like Heritage Golden Russet and Rubinette may look ho-hum, but their flavor will knock your socks off,” she points out.

Taking advantage of the season is good for people’s overall health as well. According to the USDA, one fresh medium sized apple will gives nearly 20% of the daily recommended dose of fiber encompassed in a refreshing, satisfying snack.

“Nutrition habits start at home, and the easiest way parents can instill health is to involve their children and make it as fun as possible,” stated Lindsay Smith, Public Health Educator at the Chester County Health Department. “Fall is the perfect time to take your kids to the orchard for apple picking, have an apple carving contest or create a healthier dessert like baked apples.”
