On the heels of the inspiring trek of a local Purple Heart-pinned hero who has risen through adversity and rehabbed from injury, a free electric bike from West Chester’s Hybrid-Cycles will kick his comeback story into higher gear.

Retired Marine Corps Sgt. Matthew Sondermann fought in the battle of Fallujah, Iraq, survived a devastating explosion in Afghanistan, endured a 1.5-year Army medical center recovery and ongoing struggle with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and persevered to attain a recent engineering degree from Drexel University.

On Thursday, he was named the deserving recipient of Hybrid-Cycles’ Free Ebike for a Vet promotion, offered in partnership with Rosati Ice in Clifton Heights.

“It was our way of doing a small part to acknowledge and support the military, who have sacrificed so much for our country’s freedom,” Rosati Ice President Rich Trotter said in an announcement of the event. “We were looking for a vet who could benefit from this electric bike, which could provide added mobility for exercise, rehab and recreation.”

Hybrid-Cycles’ electric bikes are custom fit to the rider’s needs, body form and lifestyle. Utilizing battery-powered motors to assist on steep hills and rough terrain, they help people become mobile again.

“It’s helping more people get back on the trails,” Hybrid-Cycles Owner and Vietnam Veteran Gary DiVincenzo said. “There’s no time like the present to take an ebike ride.”
