The Desmond Hotel Powered Through Crippling Storm

By

Intense storms last week left much of Chester County and the greater region without power. Many businesses were forced to remain closed for more than 24 hours, especially in the hospitality industry.

But that was not the case at The Desmond Hotel in Malvern. For 16 hours, the Great Valley hotelier soldiered on through the outage, powered only by an unflappable workforce, a determined leader, and a couple of gas power generators.

“It was a small victory in the whole scope of things,” Michael Chain told the Philadelphia Business Journal, “we lost some conference business [but] anything we lost was negligible.”

According to Chain, several business meetings scheduled at the hotel were cancelled while other “groups were able to make due with extension cords for necessary equipment like projects.”

Hot water and Wi-Fi remained available to all the rooms throughout the outage, even as air conditioning, which exceeded the abilities of the generators, did not.

And area business professionals weren’t the only ones adapting. The generators only powered hallway and emergency lighting systems. The night shift relied on flashlights and glow sticks, determined to maintain the reputation of the hotel even in adversity.
