Deficit Posted Despite High Charges for Four Local Hospitals

A report released in the latest issue of Health Affairs on June 8, 2015, shows that of the 4,483 hospitals studied the average markup at 50 hospitals — 49 of which were for-profit facilities — was over 1,000 percent. The study found the average markup at the other 4,433 hospitals was only 340 percent.

Six out of those 50 hospitals were located in southeastern Pennsylvania, and despite the seemingly high markups, four of them reported an operating deficits in 2014.

The study was conducted by Ge Bai of Washington & Lee University and Gerard Anderson at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Hospitals maintain that charges are not a good way to make a comparison as there are many other factors such as actual payments from government health programs, private insurers that negotiate discounts with providers that are much lower and that the hospitals provide discounts where possible for uninsured patients.
