A unique new craft distillery has risen from the ashes of an abandoned laundry and auto repair shop in downtown Phoenixville, and today Bluebird Distilling spreads its wings to a thirsty public.Bluebird Distilling

The tasting room is debuting with Bluebird White Rye Whiskey and Bluebird Vodka Thursday through Saturday nights and Sunday afternoon.

“Our whiskey is really going to be one-of-a-kind,” owner Jared Adkins said in a Phoenixville Dish preview. Bluebird will be “making vodka, gin, white rye and a four-grain bourbon whiskey, 750 gallons at a time. The vodka, gin and white rye will use rye as their base. Our gin is going to be quite unique. We are currently working on a recipe combining juniper, cucumber, citrus and spices from around the world. It should be pretty exceptional when finished. Our four-grain bourbon will be made from corn, red wheat, rye and malted barley. Down the line we will be adding new spirits. First up most likely will be a white rum and possibly vanilla bean vodka (using no artificial flavorings, of course).”

Around the flow of craft spirits — available in glasses for tasting as well as bottles, the distillery has local artwork painted on its walls and plans to eventually serve up food truck eats, live music and entertainment on the weekends and tours several times a week that immerse visitors in a sensory tasting experience.

“Quite simply, I just want to make great whiskey and spirits, and my hope in doing so is that it will make my competitors be their best, too,” Adkins said in the article. “A rising tide raises all ships!”

Adkins’ Bluebird Distilling is the satisfying result of many years of experience and dreaming coupled with a year of construction. He boasts experience with bottling for Pepsi and Nestle, mastering a home brew setup, managing the bottling and packaging at a brewery, and learning from technical college courses.

And he hand-picked Phoenixville for the rise of his whiskey empire.

“There’s a lot of foot traffic, a very vibrant downtown scene and a young professional demographic,” he said. “Moreover, the people here understood my vision and worked with me to cut through the red tape involved in opening up a distillery right in the middle of town.”

While Bluebird has just taken flight, its next stops are self-distribution to restaurants and wine and spirits stores, first in Pennsylvania and then beyond.
