A local woman who has poured out her life over more than 23 years to make others successful was herself honored as   most Outstanding Citizen of the Year.

The Chamber of Commerce recently announced Joan Holliday as the winner of its 2014 award.

“The nominees each demonstrated remarkable character and dedication in supporting and serving our community,” Discernment Committee Chairman Jim Horn said in a Chadds Ford Live report. “The contributions made by these individuals are an inspiration to all. This year’s recipient, Joan Holliday, is an exemplary model of the successes of true community service.”

Among other things, Holliday championed support for at-risk students, nonprofit volunteers and residents struggling with obesity by founding Study Buddies, Bridging the Community and ACTIVATE Chester County.

“There is nothing that makes me happier than seeing minority persons become empowered to take on leadership roles and make a difference,” Holliday wrote in her acceptance speech. “This award belongs to the citizens of Southern Chester County. They are the ones joining together, creating visions and crossing boundaries to make a difference in a peaceful, progressive and inclusive manner.”
