Low Self Esteem Pennsylvania’s Biggest Economic Challenge Says Wolf

By

At the National Governors Association Winter Meeting in Washington on Saturday, newly inaugurated Pennsylvania Tom Wolf said Pennsylvania’s biggest economic challenge was Pennsylvanians selling their state short.

In a panel discussion moderated by Fox News anchor Maria Bartiromo Saturday afternoon, Wolf was asked why he thought polls were still showing the American people remain pessimistic about the economic recovery, despite all the positive news to the contrary.

Wolf began his response noting all states, including Pennsylvania are captive of the micro and macro economic trends, and spelled out his top three economic priorities for Pennsylvania.

First, said Wolf, both the private and public sector need to work together, “to set the table for economic growth.”

Next Pennsylvania needs to “take advantage of our competitive advantages,” said Wolf including the state’s “god-given” location as the Keystone state, two great cities, a great workforce and some of the greatest universities in the world.

Finally, Wolf replied, Pennsylvania needs a robust, well funded education system that is held accountable for providing the skills that the private sector and families need.

Twenty minutes later, Bartiromo again returned to Wolf asking the Governor in office for just four weeks, what he thought was Pennsylvania’s single greatest economic challenge.

After saying he understood the role education, investments and infrastructure play in sustaining a state’s economy, Wolf said he thought the state’s greatest economic challenge is Pennsylvanian’s underestimating themselves and their state:

I think one of the things that a good leader does . . . is actually tout our own potential and make sure we are not wasting away in part because we don’t think we are as good as we really are. I think Pennsylvania is one of the underachieving states that can do a lot better with the resources it has. One of the responsibilities of leadership in Pennsylvania is to address head on, not only the structural issues including transportation and education, but also the psychological issues that keep us and hold us back. So low self-esteem is a big problem.

Do you agree with Governor Wolf? Does Pennsylvania suffer from low economic self esteem?
