As Arcelormittal Expands In The Balkans Future Of East Chicago Plant Uncertain
ArcelorMittal has just announced it is making a significant investment in its steel production facilities in Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, but idling its Indiana Harbor Long Carbon facility in East Chicago – a move that could result in the permanent loss of 304 jobs there.
ArcelorMittal, which operates a steel plate production facility in Coatesville, says it has lost money at the East Chicago facility every year since 2011. The mill uses an electric furnace to make steel bars that are used in cars and fasteners.
ArcelorMittal Zenica is investing €4.65m in the European project, and says it is firmly committed to building a long-term, sustainable future for steelmaking in the Balkan region.
ArcelorMittal has also just been named Liberia’s company of the year by Global News Network (GNN) Liberia. The company was specifically recognized for “drastically [impacting] the lives of thousands of Liberians through employment and its endless provision of scholarships.”
