A new red dappled apple that is as yet forbidden fruit to Pennsylvania apple growers is competing for consumer attention on the shelves at local Wegmans stores.

SnapDragon apples reportedly have a monster crunch and a sweet juicy flavor.  This apple and the RubyFrost apple (not yet in local stores) are two new apples developed in the Cornell University apple breeding program. The RubyFrost apple is said to have a delicate balance of sweet and tart flavors.

Supplies at Wegmans, which likes to be right on top of food trends, are only expected to last about eight weeks.

Right now there are about 900 acres of the two varieties planted in New York under the auspices of the NYAG, a grower-owned company which introduces exclusive, premium flavor apples to the marketplace. Future varieties from Cornell might be open to any grower, including those in Pennsylvania.

Growers pay royalties on trees purchased, acreage planted and fruit produced, and the income is used to market the new varieties and support Cornell’s apple-breeding program. Both varieties have been a decade in the making. Read more about the apple here: www.SnapDragonApple.com

If you miss the SnapDragon at Wegmans, traditional varieties are plentiful locally at Highland Orchard and Barnard Orchard.
