Exelon Generation Announces Plans To Build Two Turbine Units In Texas

Exelon Generation of Kennett Square is bringing about 1,000 construction and engineering jobs to Texas as it builds two 10.1.2014 Exelon

The units are being built on existing Exelon sites, one at Colorado Bend Generating Station in Wharton County, and the other at the Wolf Hollow natural gas plant in Granbury, Tx.

Exelon is using a new General Electric technology that will make them among the cleanest, most efficient CCGTs in the state and the nation.  Each new unit will add approximately 1,000 megawatts of capacity to their respective sites. Mindful of increased water efficiency in drought-prone Texas, the new units will be cooled with air instead of water.

“We’re delighted to be the first to employ this GE technology, and we’re delighted to do it in Texas,” said Ken Cornew, president and CEO of Exelon Generation. “This is how Exelon sees the energy future of America – clean, affordable and efficient.”

The plants will use gas turbines designed to start fast, ramp up quickly and turn down more efficiently than other turbines on the market.  Exelon is working with Zachry Holdings, Inc. on the projects.

Construction is expected to begin in 2015 with commercial operation targeted for 2017. These projects will also bring 17 permanent operations jobs to those Texas communities.

Exelon had revenues of $24.9 billion in 2013.  Headquartered in Chicago, Exelon does business in 48 states and delivers electricity and natural gas to more than 7.8 million customers in central Maryland (BGE), northern Illinois (ComEd) and southeastern Pennsylvania (PECO).
