Wyeth ‘Looking Out, Looking In’ Curators To Visit Brandywine River Museum

By

Andrew Wyeth's "Wind From the Sea", 1947

While the National Gallery of Art’s major exhibition Andrew Wyeth: Looking Out, Looking In  may only be viewed at the gallery in Washington, D.C., the Brandywine River Museum of Art will host a lecture and book signing in conjunction with the exhibition at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 23.

Exhibition curators and catalogue authors Nancy K. Anderson and Charles Brock will present an entirely new approach to Wyeth’s work as they investigate the artist’s fascination with windows and consider his own statement that he was an “abstract artist.”

The museum and galleries open at 5:30 p.m. and the presentation begins at 6 p.m., followed by a book signing and reception. Cost for the event is $20, or $15 for Brandywine members. Tickets may be purchased online or by calling 610-388-8326. The illustrated exhibition catalogue is available in the museum shop or online.

This event was inspired in 2009 when the National Gallery of Art was given one of Wyeth’s most famous paintings, Wind from the Sea (1947). Completed early in the artist’s career, the painting captured the moment when an ocean breeze flowing through an open window gently lifted tattered curtains. During the course of the next 60 years, Wyeth returned repeatedly to the subject of windows, producing more than 300 spare and elegant works on this theme.

There are many activities for all ages on tap at the museum this summer including Crafts in the Courtyard from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 19 and 20. This will feature unique items from independent American artists in a variety of media and include works of juried members of the Chester County Craft Guild, a chapter of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen.

The Brandywine River Museum of Art, located on U.S. Route 1 in Chadds Ford, is open daily. Admission is $12 for adults, $8 for seniors ages 65 and over, $6 for children ages 6 and older and free for children 5 and younger and Brandywine members. Museum admission is free on Sunday mornings, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Nov. 23.
