West Chester University Mounts Revolt Against State

Lashing back against unwelcome state government control, West Chester University has joined a growing number of public education institutions across the nation seeking legislation to legally break away from their state’s system.

“We can do this better than they can,” said WCU Trustee and state Sen. Robert Tomlinson in a recent Businessweek feature. “We have a train wreck coming financially. We’ve got to do something.”

As state higher education funding has dissipated, such a revolt has become increasingly attractive for WCU, which sits in the unique position of being the fastest-growing state campus and having the highest student SAT scores.

“West Chester is a great bargain — you get the same quality at a lower price,” said a recent graduate in the article.
