The book “Life with Flavor,” which chronicles the life of James S. Herr (above), founder of Nottingham-based Herr Foods, is now available in a softbound edition.

6.4.2014 Life With FlavorThe book tells the story of the inspiring lives of James S. Herr and Miriam Hershey (Mim) Herr who took out a $1,750 loan and built Herr Foods from a one-kettle potato chip concern in Lancaster into a major national snack food company.

The book has been selling briskly and even carries the endorsement of former President George H. W. Bush who wrote, “If you want valuable guidance on how to succeed in business and, more importantly, how to succeed in life, then Life with Flavor is a must read. Meet Jim Herr and learn. And whatever you do, do NOT skip Mim’s Notes in the Epilogue!”

The story told in the $14.99 softbound could be taken from pages written by the 19th-century author Horatio Alger, who wrote novels about hard-working Americans gaining success through their determination and honesty. The book was co-authored by Herr’s daughter June Herr Gunden and Downingtown author Bruce Mowday.

Mowday, president of The Mowday Group, is a journalist, publisher, media consultant and author of more than a dozen books, many on state and local history. Formerly managing editor of the Daily Local News in West Chester, Mowday is currently leading walking tours of the Gettysburg and Brandywine battlefields and West Chester.

Herr, who died just before the book was printed, was a member of many national and local civic and business organizations, and the Mennonite church. His J.S. Herr Foundation supports more than a thousand charities and organizations.

The book, published by Barricade Books, is in book stores, available on internet sites including www.mowday.com, and is also sold at the Herr’s Visitors Center, 20 Herr Drive, Nottingham.

Hardback editions are still available for $22.
