Phase 2 of the Chester Valley Trail is opening for community recreation, an event the Chester County Commissioners plan to celebrate at the close of the work day on Monday, May 5.

The commissioners and invited guests will be at 1055 Westlakes Drive, Berwyn, beginning at 5 p.m. Walkers and cyclers are invited to use the trail until it closes at sunset. Commissioners will speak at 5:30 p.m., and the ribbon cutting will take place at 6:15 p.m

Phase 2 of the trail is approximately seven miles long, running from Route 29 at Uptown Worthington east to Upper Merion Township in Montgomery County. With Phase 2 complete, the Chester Valley Trail is now a 12- mile public recreational trail.

Phase 1 of the trail opened in September, 2010 and included four miles from Exton Park to Route 29.

Phase 3 construction has already begun and will add another 1.25 miles of trail, connecting Chester County’s Exton Park site with Ironlake Boulevard in Exton. Another section of the trail, Phase 4a, will be approximately one mile in length and will continue the trail from Main Street at Exton, west to the Oaklands Corporate Center.

The completion of Phase 2 of the Chester Valley Trail increases Chester County’s contribution to The Circuit, the region’s developing trail network, which currently connects 250 miles of trails throughout the greater Philadelphia area in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The Circuit aims to connect 750 miles of trails throughout the region, to more easily connect people to jobs, recreational opportunities, public transportation and other neighborhoods.

Eventually, residents will be able to travel on the trail from Exton to the Philadelphia Art Museum.

Friends of the Chester Valley Trail, a non-profit 501©3 organization, is assisting in organizing and fundraising efforts. The group keeps an informational website to promote trail activities.

Ben LaGarde, director of the Chester Valley Trail Funding Project, blogs about the trail: http://cvtfunding.blogspot.com/

“Of all the benefits, economic or otherwise, it seems to me that the health benefits of having a vibrant, complete and, yes, healthy Chester Valley Trail are the most important,” writes the trail advocate.
