Brandywine River Museum To Host Memorial Day Art Antiques Show

By

The Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford has set its 43rd annual art antiques show, hosting 31 nationally known antique dealers, for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday on Memorial Day weekend, May 24-26.

American and English furniture, glass, ceramic folk art, quilts, European and Chinese export porcelain, metalware, rugs, and other fine antiques will be displayed and sold, with proceeds benefiting the museum Volunteers’ Art Purchase Fund. The museum’s volunteers have added more than 200 paintings, drawings and prints to the collection since 1975. General admission is $15.

There will also be a preview reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 23. The reception will feature valet parking, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, seafood, sushi, carving stations, coffee and dessert to background music by “First Choice.” Tickets are $125 per person and $100 for “Young Collectors,” those 35 and under. Tickets include admission to the show throughout the weekend.

Amanda C. Burdan, associate curator, will also present a breakfast and tour of the exhibition, “Wilhelm Schimmel: A Bold Piece of Work,” from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 24.

Schimmel (1817 to 1890) was a German immigrant who lived and worked in Cumberland County following the Civil War. The drifter often traded his colorful carvings for room and board or a drink in a tavern as he wandered the countryside. His larger carvings of eagles with outstretched wings-made with only a simple pocket knife-were particularly successful in striking a patriotic chord with Pennsylvanians.

Often in trouble with the law, Schimmel and his exploits repeatedly found their way into local newspapers, increasing his reputation as an artisan and a miscreant. The price of the breakfast and presentation, which includes admission to the Antiques Show, is $25 per person.

The exhibition of highly collectible Schimmel works will run May 23 through June 22. The price of the breakfast and presentation, which includes admission to the Antiques Show, is $25 per person.
