The Historic Preservation Society of Gettysburg-Adams County is working to preserve local historic barns and share its knowledge and experiences with the rest of the “Pennsylvania Barn Core Region,” which includes a large swath of Chester County, writes Jason Nark for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Pennsylvania Barn Core Region is a long corridor in the shape of a hurricane pattern that encompasses parts of several counties and the whole of Adams County.

The Society seeks out barns in Adams County to preserve. If the barn fits the criteria, it gets awarded a historic status and the owner is offered grant money that can help them fix the structure. For a barn to be considered historic, it has to be at least 50 years old and it cannot be a modern pole or stick-frame barn.

This year, the Society will give out grants totaling $12,000 to owners to help them with critical repairs. With Adams being the only county that is actively preserving farms, other counties have expressed interest in learning from them.

“We’re doing a presentation in York County in the spring, and hopefully that will kick-start a lot of projects there,” said David Maclay, a barn preservationist.
