Philadelphia residents, travelers, and visitors will soon have a new transportation center to go to at the site of a shuttered bus terminal in Center City, writes Hayden Mitman for NBC10 Philadelphia.
The center officially opened on Friday, May 1, the Philadelphia Park Authority’s new transportation center is the culmination of a yearslong ordeal.
After the city’s Center City bus terminal was closed when talks started about bringing a new arena to the area, it bounced around from several locations.
However, with talks of a new arena in Center City now over, city officials have cut the ribbon on the PPA’s new Transportation Center.
Located on the 1000 block of Filbert Street — where the Greyhound bus terminal used to be — the new transportation center features 44,000 square feet of renovated bus bays, including 11 of them with full ADA accessibility. The terminal will also have 13,000 square feet of interior space with 189 available seats for passengers.
Organizers said in a statement that the new structure represents “a significant investment” in the city’s transportation infrastructure and will help “enhance Philadelphia’s mobility and accessibility.”
Once operations begin on May 1 at 12 a.m., the transportation center will be staffed 24/7, organizers said.
