Building Bridges Across Generations: How Barclay Friends and Exton Elementary Are Redefining Community

Fourth grade students from Exton Elementary sit with a Barclay Friends resident, listening closely and writing down his life stories as part of a meaningful intergenerational project.

Barclay Friends recently welcomed fourth-grade students from Exton Elementary for a meaningful intergenerational project that highlights the power of connection across generations.

During their visit, students spent time with residents listening to their life stories, asking thoughtful questions, and working to capture those memories in writing. What began as a classroom-inspired activity quickly became a deeply enriching experience for everyone involved.

Through conversation and shared curiosity, students gained a deeper understanding of aging, history, and the value of personal stories. For residents, the visit brought energy, joy, and a sense of purpose as they reflected on their experiences and shared them with a younger generation eager to learn. These interactions fostered genuine relationships, reminding both groups that learning and connection do not have age limits.

This multi-visit initiative is part of Barclay Friends’ ongoing commitment to creating a vibrant, inclusive community where engagement and lifelong learning are central to daily life. Intergenerational programs like this not only reduce social isolation for older adults but also help young people develop empathy, communication skills, and a broader perspective on the world around them.

Maria Santangelo, CEO of Barclay Friends, captured the impact of the program perfectly: “Intergenerational connection is at the heart of what makes community life meaningful. Watching our residents share their stories with these bright fourth graders reminds us that learning and belonging truly span every age. We are grateful to Exton Elementary for helping us nurture these relationships that strengthen our community.”

As Barclay Friends looks ahead to future visits, the bonds formed between students and residents will continue to grow, creating lasting memories and a stronger sense of community for all involved.
