World Cafe Live Undergoes Name Change Amid Bankruptcy Filing Proceedings

After a year's worth of turmoil, World Cafe Live is entering a new era with a new name after a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.

World Cafe Live has filed for bankruptcy after a year’s worth of turmoil, and has also changed its name amid the proceedings, writes Dan DeLuca for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

After filing for bankruptcy on March 10, the venue has also announced its new name as World Stage.

In May 2025, the venue welcomed a new management team led by entrepreneur and technologist Joseph Callahan.

He and his team is calling the name change a new beginning for the longtime cultural and artistic hub.

The timing of the bankruptcy proceedings was deliberate, as the Department of Revenue of the City of Philadelphia posted a “Cease Operations” notice on the venue’s door last month for a “serious tax violation.” The deadline was March 11.

Sean Diaz, World Cafe Live’s CEO, said that filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy “provides a responsible framework to restructure the organization, attract new capital, and ensure that this important cultural institution continues to serve artists and audiences for years to come.”

World Cafe Live was founded by Hal Real in 2004 and became a nonprofit in 2018. Real served as CEO from its opening until his retirement in May 2025.
