Penn Medicine Chester County Hospital Earns National Recognition For Quality Care for Eighth Consecutive Year

Penn Medicine Chester County Hospital ranks among the nation’s top hospitals for quality and safety for the eighth consecutive year, earning 2025 Vizient recognition.

For the eighth year in a row, Penn Medicine Chester County Hospital has been named among the nation’s top hospitals for delivering safe, high-quality, and patient-centered care.

The honor comes from Vizient, a provider-driven healthcare performance improvement company, through its 2025 Quality and Accountability Health Care Collaborative, which evaluates hospitals across the country on key measures of care, including safety, effectiveness, efficiency, and patient experience. The collaborative helps participating hospitals understand their performance against their peers and identify structures and processes associated with high performance in quality and safety.

Chester County Hospital ranked in the top 10 among 204 hospitals nationwide in its peer group.

“This recognition reflects the dedication of every member of our team,” said Kevin Sowti, MD, Chief Quality and Safety Officer. “To earn this honor once is impressive. To do it eight years in a row speaks to our unwavering commitment to excellence.”

What This Means for the Chester County Community

For patients and families in Chester County, this achievement is more than an award. It’s the reassurance that world-class care is available close to home.

“Our culture revolves around quality and safety,” said Bill Surkis, MD, Chief Medical Officer. “It’s the axis our world turns on, and by participating in this benchmarking, it helps us continually raise the bar for patient care.” Vizient’s collaborative is “an incredibly valuable tool in caring for our patients” and aligns with the hospital’s strong commitment to delivering the best possible care, Surkis added.

Sowti explained that the Vizient performance recognition is more than an award. It’s a way to “see what we’re doing well” and the value we bring to our neighbors and patients, and what opportunities there are to improve. It’s very data-driven.” Vizient provides transparent, real-world comparative data on hundreds of data points, such as mortality, length of stay, complications, patient experience, and other factors, to illustrate efficiency, effectiveness, and safety amongst other domains.

Sowti described the hospital’s approach to patient safety and quality improvement as a “team sport” involving everyone from doctors and nurses to the staff who register patients and clean the rooms. He credits the leadership team, especially CEO Karen Pinsky, MD, for ingraining a culture of excellence into every aspect of operations and patient care.
